When In Sleaford…Arts & Heritage Trail

The When in Sleaford… Arts & Heritage Trail is a series of bronze roundels sited in pavements and on walls around Sleaford.

This free, wheelchair accessible and family-friendly experience takes you on a tour of venues to visit, historical sites and the town’s collection of public artworks.

There is a free printed map and sticker pack for the trail available from the venues listed below. The map can also be downloaded for free here.

Short sections featuring many artworks and visitor attractions are easily completed, but if you’re up for a longer adventure – the full trail is about 3 miles and takes approx. 2 hours to complete.

Schools, groups and individuals can access a free workshop pack with lots of activities inspired by the town’s history at participating venues, by emailing: [email protected].

The roundels were created by David Mackie, working with Becky Adams, community groups and schools, and inspired by old maps of the area, archaeological finds, local heritage and wildlife along the River Slea.

18 roundels were commissioned in 2016 with two new roundels added in 2025. A memorial artwork was also installed in 2016, sited at William Alvey Primary School. This piece was designed to replace a scroll once kept at St Denys Church, commemorating 72 young men from the school who died during World War 1. You can find out more about the designs for the artworks by visiting the artist’s blog wheninsleaford.com

The When in Sleaford Arts & Heritage Trail was produced by the Hub and commissioned by North Kesteven District Council in 2017. The project
was supported by Sleaford Town Council, The Mukherjee Trust and Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant.
Two new roundels were created in 2024 and funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
