Twenty years ago, when looking for a site where we could buy a house and build a workshop for our fast-growing embroidery business, we came across a barren field with a derelict cottage outside Lincoln. First impressions were dire. There was one willow tree, a row of overgrown cupressus and fencing made of old bedsteads, but the views were good and the neighbouring wood was an SSSI. So, we set to work. Before almost the first brick was laid we had planted hundreds of trees and shrubs. By the time that the buildings were completed we had excavated a large pond and wildlife was abundant. Eventually it became time to retire and consider how we could best use the buildings and also enjoy a satisfying project. So now we have converted our embroidery workshop into a holiday let with electric bikes for hire. Local history and cycling were always twin passions for me and when push bikes became difficult I discovered electric bikes. It was a pleasure both to set up the holiday let and to put together a series of bike routes with historical notes to entertain our guests as they explore our fascinating county.
