Sleaford Riverside Heritage Trail

Step back in time and explore the rich history of Sleaford along the beautiful River Slea. Once a vital waterway, the River Slea played a central role in the development of the town. As recorded in the Domesday Book, 18 watermills once operated along the river, with many clustered around Sleaford. By 1794, the river east of Sleaford was transformed into the Sleaford Navigation, a navigable waterway that connected the town to the River Witham and the wider English waterway network—a crucial link during the early industrial revolution.

The Sleaford Riverside Heritage Trail offers a picturesque circular route along a section of the River Slea, starting and finishing at two historic landmarks: Navigation House and Cogglesford Watermill. Managed by North Kesteven District Council, both sites feature fascinating displays that reveal their significance in the town’s history.

The trail is just a mile long, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. Begin at Navigation House and follow the southern waypoints, or start at Cogglesford Watermill and head north. Whichever direction you choose, take time to explore the exhibits at both sites when open. Discover how the River Slea shaped Sleaford’s heritage and enjoy a scenic journey through its storied past.
