Thursday, June 6

Canwick – Historical Briefings

When: Thursday, June 6, 10.30am and 11.45am

What: RAF History devotee and historian Allan Jones presents two free book-able briefngs: The RAF on D-Day and Operation Taxable, which was a key part of the campaign.

Canwick – Free open-air concert

When: Thursday, June 6, 2-3.30pm

What: Join professional vintage group the Blighty Belles for this free open-air concert of 1940s music.

Eagle – Church service and bell ringing

When: Thursday, June 6, 10am & 2:15pm

What: Communion service at 10am, followed by bell ringing between 2.15pm – 3.30pm

 

Great Hale & Little Hale – Wreath Laying

When: Thursday, June 6, 10am

What: Great Hale PC, Little Hale PC and the Hale Magna and Hale Parva Burial Board Committee are laying a wreath, with bugler in attendance.

Martin – Various D-Day events

When: Thursday, June 6

What: The ringing of the Church bells; a thanksgiving service in the Church (time tbc); The Parish Council are lighting the beacon at 9.15pm on the Playpark.

Where: Martin playpark off Linwood Road.

Ruskington – A Reflection for D-Day

When: Thursday 6 June at 10.55am

What: A short service of around 20 minutes followed by the unveiling of a Tommy Silhouette in the Garden of Remembrance at around 11.30am.

Where: All Saints Church, and Garden of Remembrance.

Scopwick – Beacon lighting and exhibition

When: Thursday, June 6, 7pm – 10pm.

What: Lighting the beacon of peace at 9.15pm. 1940’s music. Display of exhibits and information about D-Day and life in 40’s Britain, inc: evacuation, the land girls, rationing, stars of the day etc.

Sleaford – D-Day Proclamation

When: Thursday, June 6, 12pm

What: Sleaford Town Crier John Griffiths will read out a specially written Proclamation together with 400 other Town Criers across the UK. Everyone is welcome to come along and listen.

Where: Sleaford Market Place.

 

Swaton – Beacon lighting

When: Thursday, June 6, 9.15pm

What: Lighting of the village beacon in line with the national event.

 

Thorpe on the Hill – Bell ringing

When: Thursday June 6, 3.45pm

What: Bell ringing from 3.45pm to 4.30pm

 

Welbourn – Bellringing

When: Thursday, June 6, 6.30pm

What: Bellringing.

Scopwick – Exhibition

When: Friday, June 7, 10am – 12pm.

What: Display of exhibits and information about D-Day and life in 40’s Britain, inc: evacuation, the land girls, rationing, stars of the day etc.

Saturday, June 8

Digby – Dance with Supper

When: Saturday, June 8, doors open at 7.30pm.

What: Wartime/40’s theme event with music by local artists Karen Clare and the Silverlions Ukulele Band. Period dress encouraged. Tickets £15 (includes Hog Roast supper)

Monday, June 24

Sleaford – Armed Forces Day flag raising

When: Monday, June 24, 10.30am

What: The annual flag raising ceremony where the contribution of Armed Forces personnel, past, present and future, is celebrated in the presence of veterans through a short ceremony, including junior school choir. Public welcome. See poster.

Where: Sleaford Market Place.

Sleaford – Armed Forces Day veterans’ lunch

When: Monday, June 24, 12pm

What: D-Day veterans are invited to join the annual Armed Forces Day lunch and presentation of Veteran’s Badges, celebrating the contribution of Service personnel, past, present and future. Attendance by invitation only.

Where: NKDC Civic Suite.

Saturday, June 29

Sleaford1940’s Day

When: Saturday, June 29, 11am – 4pm

What: Annual free event organised by the Town Council and the William Alvey School with themed activities for all the family, air raid shelter tours, flypast, historic vehicles, live entertainment etc. Best-dressed 1940s style competition with three categories: family, adult and child.

Sleaford – Armed Forces Day at the Mill

When: Saturday, June 29, 12pm-4pm

What: Alongside the activity at the William Alvey School, Cogglesford Mill honours service men and women through a photographic exhibition.

Where: Cogglesford Watermill, East Road, Sleaford, NG34 7EA
