‘A Tale of Two Apprentices’ Exhibition

Cranwell Aviation Heritage Museum

16 June 2023 at 10:00 am

Cranwell Aviation Heritage Museum is proud to announce the opening of their new exhibition, ‘A Tale of Two Apprentices’.

The museum’s exhibition will showcase the experiences of two young men, Herbert Tomlin and Frank Whittle, who both joined the RAF as ‘Boy’ entrants and were trained as apprentices in technical trades and completed their apprenticeships at the Boys’ Wing, RAF Cranwell.

Visitors to the exhibition will be able to follow both Herbert and Frank’s journeys from their early days as apprentices and through their respective journeys through life, RAF Cranwell remaining – for separate reasons – a recurring theme throughout their lives.

“Although both men started in the same place and led fascinating lives, they ended a million miles apart,” says Museum Supervisor Angela Riley. “Few will have heard of one of our apprentices, while the other’s achievements are the subject of biographies, documentaries and memorials. We’re delighted to be able to share both stories with visitors to the museum.”

The exhibition will also feature supporting items, and visitors are able to enjoy the interactive exhibits including the flight simulator and hands-on activities.

‘A Tale of Two Apprentices’ will be on display at Cranwell Aviation Heritage Museum from 1st May 2023. The museum is open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Mondays from 10am to 3pm, with last entry at 2:30pm.
