Set in Girton College, Cambridge, in 1896, Blue Stockings follows four young women studying at the first college to admit female students. While they can attend lectures and sit exams, they are denied the right to graduate. As they face academic pressure, social expectations and opposition from their male peers, the play explores their fight for equality and the personal sacrifices that come with it. At the centre of the story is Tess Moffat, who must choose between love and her education as tensions build around a crucial vote on women’s degrees.
